  • Borrowing Books from the Library

I was finally able to borrow a book from the library. It had been checked out for a while, and I wondered who the previous reader was. Then I realized that borrowing books from the library isn't the same as it used to be. Or is it?

I have this vague memory where books had little pockets in the front/back cover, and these pockets contained sturdy pieces of stamped paper that kept track of when the books were due and who borrowed them.

Now everything's stored on the computer.

  • "Christmas"

On Wednesday, while waiting for class, with the sky all gloomy and winter-y, I started humming "White Christmas." The incomplete piece above conjures for me a montage of cozy fireplace panning shots and cups of hot cocoa/cider.

  • Cost and Worth

"It is a well-established maxim that what costs most is, and ought to be, valued most."
-Walter Starkie's translation of "Don Quixote de la Mancha" by Miguel Cervantes

By grades and stars is my price rated
At times on sale or oft-inflated
But what I'm worth is what I cost
No less the debt paid by Your cross

  • Mid-Autumn

    brilliant pearl of the sky
    resurrect the dead of night
with lanterns prancing to and fro
    celebrating lore of old

    ...

and then come the santa ana winds.
